Childhood and legacy

it seems my childhood collided in so many different ways this week. First, I saw Transformers: Rise of the Fallen on Wednesday. And in the trailers was the previews for the GI Joe movie. Let me tell you, how weird it is to see both of them have gained so much momentum. From 3rd to 5th grade, I pined for when school would let out at the end of the day, so I could race home, and watch Transformers and GI Joe cartoons. They were normally on back to back.

Also, I read both comic series, I probably stopped in the 7th grade, I think? Like, I lived month by month for those comics. And my favorite were the GI Joe Vs Transformers comic series(Which I hope they end up making into a movie too). And I had every single action figure for GI Joe in the 80's, had many of the playsets. Like the Cobra Headquarters. I made my mom get me the aircraft carrier for my birthday or Christmas one year. I actually used to integrate GI Joe and Star Wars action figures together, and what Transformers I had. Let me tell you, in my world, it was perfectly fine for Luke Skywalker to make out with Scarlet. Transformers never made out with the humans though, they didnt have anatomies. Actually, neither did the humans. Well, the female Gi Joes did have bumps where breasts should be. Anyway, so that was my childhood. And yes, I listened to KISS while playing with such.

And then the passing of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett:

Michael Jackson was so huge in the 80's, you could not escape him. Try as you might, it didnt happen. You turn on MTV and the "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat it" videos were on during any given hour during the early to mid-80's, till Bad came out. Then it was a rotation of "Bad", and I dont remember what other singles came off that.

I was a huge fan of both Michael Jackson and Prince. There was a time when I actually wanted to be black, because of them. "Thriller" came out in '82 and "Purple Rain" in '84, so I was 8 and 10 years old respectively, in 2nd and 4th grades. I feel that I literally grew up with both of them.

Farrah, yeah I watched Charlies Angels when I was a kid. It was on any given day of the week, in syndication, and what not. Honestly, I kinda liked the brunettes more. I remember as a kid, I would get Farrah Fawcett and Heather Thomas confused with one another. The Fall Guy was on about the same time, and they were both popular sexual icons at the time.

So, I reveled in my childhood, and then saw my childhood come crashing down with the King of Pop. I know that I am getting old, and those that I idolized are much older. So, it's only a matter of time before the likes of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Prince, The Breakfast Club kids, and so on, start dropping off. I;ve already seen Eric Carr, Robert Palmer, John Ritter, Don Knotts, and so many others pass away.

I've said it before: Death is something else. Unfortunately, we know it will come some time in our lives. Whether it is our loved ones, or ourselves. We are all given life when we are born, and we all will die eventually. It's what we do in between that really matters the most. When we leave, our legends will live on through the loved ones that will remain. Michael Jackson is gone, but his music will live on forever. People 20 years from now, will try to do the moonwalk.

been downloading Bryan Adams, and listening to him alot. Like his regular studio albums from the 80's. Downloaded Into the Night a few days ago, The Best of Me around the same time, and today dled Reckless. I forgot how good Reckless is. I had it int he 80's either on cassette or vinyl, cant remember. i was a huge, huge fan of his work in those days. I forgot how many singles came off Reckless: "Summer of 69", "Heaven", "Run to You", "Somebody", "Kids Wanna Rock", and I think "Its Only Love" is the song he did with Tina Turner. The days of going that deep into an album for singles, is pretty much over. They dont do that much anymore. At best, you're lucky if they promote 4 songs off an album. And then most of the artists today, are really disposable. After an album or two, people tend to lose interest, and move on to the next trend. but that's where we are as a society, a short attention span. Wow, I really just summed up society based on music.

Also just downloaded Tokio Hotel. I actually liked them. Never heard them before, but read plenty about them on ONTD. I wasnt sure what to expect. I kinda expected something kinda Disney, or maybe indie. But the kids from the band, look like they could be interesting. so yeah, Tokio Hotel is good.

Duran Duran's Greatest: I see it in stores, and I think I should get it. But, it's always expensive, very seldom sale priced, and I wonder do I really need another Duran Duran "Best of". I have Decade. Grant it, that album came out in like 1990, and Duran Duran have made more body of music since. Greatest does cover some of the 90's stuff too, which is cool. If I can find it at a reasonable cost, I might buy it?

i went into the Tunes in Voorhees, and didnt buy anything today. I kept picking up things, thinking about buying them. But, I didnt feel they would keep my interest long, and I would forget about them soon enough. I kinda wanted some older Get up Kids or Saves the day, but didnt find any. I also kinda want some older Cheap Trick, Allice Cooper, etc.. I did see some cheap Soilent Green albums, and thought about buying those. But, I dont know much about them. I just know they are metal. oh yeah and I saw a used copy of the recent Queensryche album. I have downloaded and do like it, but Queensryche are one of those bands I cant listen to all too much in a row.

things between Amanda and I have gone well. she says she has been really happy recently. Which is a good thing. Because, it sucks when she isnt happy. it sucks when we arent getting along. but i know its only temporary, so i dont stress about it.

work sucks. but i guess thats the point. if it was fun, we wouldnt care what we got paid, or if we got paid at all.

it gets hot in here. we havent turned on the ac yet.. because it costs too much money.. if it gets any worse, we wont be so happy anymore. fighting will ensue, and maybe make up sex. so its a win win situation really.

one of my co-workers said one day that people in grocery stores were like zombies. And since then I have realized that he is right. They really trully are. they walk around, with no real sense of purpose, and they just dont show any real signs of life. they do stupid things, ask stupid questions, and are annoying. It's like "go on granny and back yourself up with your grocery cart, dont bother to look both ways, or behind you before doing so. I'm only barreling down behind you with a pallet full of coke related 12 packs. naw dont worry it's not heavy."
i love the people who just stand there. or they leave their carts in the most inane places. like in the middle of the aisle, or blocking the entrance to the aisle. Or they will be like "oh I'm sorry I didnt see you", and then I will "yeah you fucking did. you saw me coming down the aisle". "Am I in your way?". "Oh no, I am just standing here holding a case of 2 liters for exercising purposes, you go ahead and read the labels on the baked beans there".

yeah i'll probably go postal one day, haha.. i dont know what my weapon of choice will be. maybe I will figure out how to set up the soda machines outside the stores, so that they shoot soda cans and bottles at people and their cars. You know, kinda like MAximum Overdrive.

been downloading alot. the past two days have been about just checking out various stuff.. Just downloaded Phil Collins "Hello, I must be Going" cd, just for "I Dont Care Anymore". Downloaded Journey's "Arrival" because I wanted to here some guy not named Steve Perry sing. Downloaded a Motion City Soundtrack cd, because I remember the kids in New Years Day talking about them. I found a folder that has some Cars catalogue. I might DL one or two of those. Downloaded some Dead Kennedys and Husker Du, just because I Was curious. I mean people talk about how influencial they were as punk bands. I've decided I like Dead Kennedys, but not so much Husker Du.

things are not going great

Since I've started downloading music, I've kinda gotten storage issues on my comp. And it was such a hard decision to figure out what to delete, musically, from itunes library. I had really became attached to the music there. Well, one day I just decided to delete it all, and start anew. I deleted all 2000 songs, but about 600. And now I am in the process of adding new stuff. I dont think I am going to allow the itunes to go over 1000 to 1200 songs. There really is no need for it, it's not like I will listen to all of them. Some people could say "well, Kevin get an external hard drive". Yes that is a good suggestion, but since I am poor, not an affordable suggestion.

but now I am trying to be more diverse with my music. I realize that sometimes that my itunes can be toppling over with Metal, or hair metal, or whatever I am feeling a the moment. Like last week I had imported the 2 disc Cars Anthology, The Cure's greatest hits, Devo's greatest hits, downloaded Cyndi Laupers best of, PAt Benetar's best of, etc. Do you see the pattern here? 1. alot of 80's oriented stuff in those,or you can look at the first three and see some new wave flavors.

in the last 24 hours I have uploaded Blink 182, Beatles, Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, David Gilmour era Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, Alkaline Trio, Anthrax, Beach Boys, Billy Idol, Black Label Society, Public Enemy, Guided by Voices, Guns n Roses, Hollywood Undead, I could go on. But, I am trying to make it more diverse. I have metal(Anthrax, Bls) in there, I have the legendary(Floyd, Beatles, Beach Boys) in there, I have punkish(Idol, A3) in there, GNR can serve as hair metal, Guided by Voices is my experimentive stuff, and hip hop(PE).

And then I have a stack of cds here I will put in: Turbo Negro, Sonic Youth, Twisted Sister, Transport LEague, Dylan, Get up Kids, ZZ Top, and Stax Records..

I've also downloaded MGMT, Anberlin, 311's new album, Chickenfoot, and I dont know what else. I've heard people talk about MGMT, but I resisted because I didnt think I would like them. I figured they were just another pretentious indie rock band. Because pretentious indie hipsters like them. But, I kinda like what I heard. And Anberlin, I just Dled last night, but really like them . New 311 album is good too, it's different.

Went to New York yesterday. It was a nice two hour drive. Got on the New Jersey Turnpike, around exit 7, and took it all the way to the Holland Tunnel. Past a car fire along the way, that was interesting. it's nice to look at a car on fire on the highway, as long as it is not your own. Other then people rubbernecking, and slowing down to look at the car fire, traffic was pretty smooth. I left my house at around 3ish, and got to the parking garage on LAfeyette at just under 5pm.

Went upstairs to TVT, which is now known as The Orchard, because the Orchard bout TVT. There are onlwy about 4 or 5 people who used to work for TVT, now still there. So, it was nice to see them, nice to see how the Orchard changed the place. Gone are the individual offices, replaced by cubicles. Where accounting used to be, is now the sales staff. Where the radio and A&R used to be is now accounting.

I was there for a bit, and left. I went down to J&R and did some looking around. Unfortunately, Charlie wasnt there. I did purchase The Time- Ice Cream Castles and Kiss- Creatures of the Night(Remastered) for $15.

Then I went back up to Bleecker/4th street area. When I came out of the subway, I passed Justin Long. I've only seen a handful of celebrities, during any of my time in NY. So, it's always cool when it happens. even if they might be B or C list. Went to Phebe's, a buncha TVT folk were there, and we hung out there til 9ish. And eventually, we all started going our seperate ways.

I went up to Virgin Union Square, because I hear it's closing, and I figure there would be some good sales. Stuff was only marked down 30%. That's not a good close out sale.Especially when it's off the normal price, which is $18.99, making the price about $13.

Finally, I left the city. I Stopped at White Castles in Edison, NJ. And drove the rest of the way home. It was a good night

I was fired from Dominos yesterday. The past 2 weeks, I have had to call out, or call and say I will be late, due to working later than usual for Coke. Unfortunately, Coca Cola is my primary job. If that means I have to screw the other job, that's what will happen. Coke pays more, Dominos was always just a part time minimum wage job. I can find another one of those. And besides, I have been largely unhappy at Dominos. Just hated going to work there. So boring, and sometimes felt like a waste of time.
so tomorrow, I go apply for Papa John's.

I discovered a community on LJ, where I can download music. There is a plethora of material there too, and its great. So far I have downloaded Punk Goes Pop 1 and 2, Daughtry(always wanted to check him out), Green Day's new album, Vh1 the 80's Vol. 1 and 2, an All Time Low cd, James Marsters(Spike to us Buffy fans), Eddie IZzard, and also downloaded Korn covering "Creep", and Staind covering "Comfortably Numb".

When I find sites like this, I see it as an opportunity to download stuff that I've been reluctant to buy, like the Daughtry cd. It's my chance to try new things, without spending money. If I like it, then I will buy it. at least that is what I tell myself.

I keep thinking today is Friday. I think because the last few weeks, I have been off on Fridays. And, today which is Thursday, I am off.

Amanda's mom got remarried last weekend, to Bob. Amanda was a bridesmaid, as was her sister, and her brother was a groomsmen. I was, nothing, but a guest. A guest who had to cart home all the presents(to their house), and my really drunken wife to our house. Amanda doesnt drink often, and well on saturday she drank alot of 7 and 7's. And she was annoying at the end of the night. Asking the same 5 questions over and over again. Unfortunately, I wasnt really patient in the whole thing, kinda was an asshole to her. but we are fine now. unless she reads this post, and is reminded of the ordeal.

Other then that, nothing spectacular has happened. oh except, on Sunday, I took the new car to work. Work being Coke. Every morning I stop at Wawa or Heritages, and get a Monster or Amp energy drink. On Sunday I got a Monster. As I drive, I drink it, this is normal. Well, on Sunday I dropped the can while driving, and it was open. It landed on the console, on the side, so naturally it spilled out. But, it wasnt too bad, so I thought. so later that day, I had to work at Dominos. I went to work there, went on a delivery. Came back to the car, went to put on my seat belt, and it wouldnt latch. I tried unsuccessfully, several times to no avail. I did get it to latch to the passenger side lock.

So on Monday we took it to the dealership, where we bought it. I figured since its not a normal wear and tear, that the dealership would fix it for free. And they said they would, as long as there wasnt anything stuck in there. Turns out, my spilling the monster was the result of the seat belt not working. And thus, they charged us $21 to fix it.. Moral of the story, dont spill energy drink or soda in your seat belt lock. it breaks them.

I went back to Best Buy today and bought a few more cds. I got:
Clutch- Slow Hole to China
Burn Halo(former 18 Visions members)

Both were sale priced, Clutch was 9.99 and Burn Halo was 7.99. I looked at a few others, Duff Mckagen's cd was 11.99, New Found Glory was 7.99, and there was a band called Halestorm for 7.99.. I dont know anything about the latter, but the cover of the album suggest they would be rock, and I might like them. Yes, I am one of those people who would buy a cd based on a cd cover, because sometimes it is a good indication of what genre it could be. Sometimes, I have been disappointed, and others I have been pleasantly surprised.

All in all, I spent $19.25 on 2 cds. I'm happy with both purchases. I know 18 Visions was somewhere in the hardcore, screamo, etc wave, and I seem to think they tried the new wave fad too. Actually, I get them mixed up with Kill Hannah. Anyway, Burn Halo seems to be a straight up rock record. And, it works for me.

I might pick up the NFG cd next? If it's still sale priced as low as it is, I will. Never really got into them, and part of it was because I Wrote them off as just another pop band, a long time ago. Maybe, I should give them another chance?

Also, I found a batch of Pearl Jam cds in one of the rooms of my house, that I have not listened to. They are all bootleg live series ones, I would say about 8 to 10 of them. So, I will be mixing those into my listenings for the next week, or whatever.

some things are happening at Coke, I will write about those later.

Oh yeah, listening to this Cursive record now, I'm digging it more and more as I listen

Our internet went down on Saturday. The home phone is tied to the internet, so we lost that too. A Comcast tech was supposed to come out on Sunday, but they didnt show. One finally came out on Monday night, around 5:30, he fixed it. Around 7:30p, it went down again. A tech came tonight, and fixed it. So far, so good. It's been annoying not to have internet for 5 days. I can live without the phone though. We just got the phone becuase it made our cable bill cheaper.

Went to Best Buy tonight, kept finding cds I wanted. I found cds by New York Dolls, Duff McKagan, Seventh Void, saw that Clutch has a new album out, also saw they have a live album which looks pretty good, and Tinted Windows was sale priced at $7.99. I wanted all of them. I ended up walking out with just the Se3venth Void.

Seventh Void is two of the guys from Type O Negative. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me more of Soundgarden. The vocals sounds like Chris Cornell. That's probably why they are tagged as "grunge" on last.fm? I cant say for sure if I like it? I only listened to it once, and it was listenable. Just dont know if it's one of those albums, that I will listen to numerous times in one sitting?

Depending on how much money I spend throughout the day tomorrow, I might go back and get one of the other cds

Since last Thursday, I've acquired a wealth of eclectic cds. I think I posted some, but I will post them again.

Last Thursday I got:
Snapcase- Bright Flashes: I like it. But, it's not as good as the other two Snapcase cds I have. Did they change vocalist or something? Dude's voice sounds different.. Still good, but not as good.

+44- When Your Heart Stops Beating: I kinda liked when Mark Hoppus would sing during Blonk-182 days. It was a nice break from listening to Tom Delonge. I like it when Delonge sings too, but sometimes his voice can get irritating when listening to it too much, kinda like Mark Slaughter. And I was under the impression Hoppus sang in +44, but it doesnt always sound like he is singing. It's still an ok cd. And I like Travis Barker as a drummer, I think he is pretty good.

Boysetsfire- The Misery Index The Plague Years: It's decent. It seems that they were better in their early years, they had more something. And in their later years, you can tell there was more money put into their records, I wouldnt say over-produced, just not really the same. Still good though.

Then on Sunday, I went back to the same store because it was celebrating Record Store Day. Record Store Day was on Saturday the 18th, but they were still celebrating it on Sunday too. And, you got a dollar off each purchase. I got the following:

The Yardbirds- Shape of Things, the Very Best of: I had just read an interview with Jeff Beck in this month's Guitar World, last week or week before. So, it was on top of my mind to get some Yardbirds, or more Jeff Beck solo stuff. I have a Yardbirds cd, but the quality is not that good. So, I stumbled across this best of, with a copyright date of 2004, and I figured with remastering and other technology around, it would probably sound better. And it does!! It's got 22 tracks on it, and it's pretty good. I know this band not only spawn such luminaries as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page but, it also influenced many, many bands including Aerosmith, Kiss, etc. So, now I am diving into the Yardbirds, and I like what I hear.
Next, I want to get more Jeff Beck stuff. I have about 5 of his cds now, but after reading the interview, it makes me want to get others.

Foo Fighters- Big Me(EP): I got this mainly because it has a cover of Kiss/Ace Frehley's "Ozone". I downloaded this cover back in the NApster days, before Metallica took them down. And the quality of that mp3 wasnt great. But, now I have it on cd, and all is right in the world. Also it has a song called "How I Miss You", which I have never heard.

Screaming Tress- Sweet Oblivion: I remember when this band came out, during the early grunge movement. They had that track on MTV called "Nearly Lost You". I dug that song, always meant to get the cd, just never did. 17 years later, I buy it. I havent really listened to it yet, so I cant say for sure if it's good, or whatever. One of these days, I will get around to it.

Mr. Bungle- Disco Volante: The only Bungle cd I ever owned was a burn of California. I had been listening to the Peeping Tom cd over last weekend, so the vocals of Mike Patton were fresh. I looked in the Faith No More section, because the only cd I dont own by them is "King for a Day", and they didnt have it. And then I looked in Bungle, and they had this one. Score one for Peter.
You know after listening to this cd, I find myself starting to think I might be schizophrenic. Then I realize the music is schizophrenic, and it's ok.

Altogether, I only spent about $32 on all 7 of those cds. I am good at finding cd bargains.

Then, in the last two days a few ONTD members have hooked me up with the new LAcuna Coil, and Tinted Windows cds.

I am pleasantly surprised how good the Lacuna Coil cd is. Karmacode bored me, so I was reluctant to buy this one.

Tinted Window si a pop supergroup which includes Taylor Hanson(Hanson), JAmes Iha(Smashing Pumpkins, Bun E. Carl(Cheap Trick), and some dude from the Flaming Lips. I never thought I would like anything involving a member of Hanson, but I really like this cd. You know, Taylor Hanson's voice on this album is reminiscent of Robin Zander from Cheap Trick. And James Iha really showcases his ability to play guitar on this album. I dont remember pulling off these kinds of licks when he was with the Pumpkins. MAybe Billy Corgan was too afraid, to let him rip, because Billy knew he might be seen as inferior to Iha.

Next I want to get more Jeff Beck, New York Dolls, and new Depeche Mode.

I was petting Pumpkin earlier today. I saw that one of the cat's toy mice was on the ground. I picked it up and gave it to Pumpkin. She played with it for a few seconds, you know bit at it, swatted it a bit, and then I guess it tired her out and she just chilled. I Delivered to room 126 at the Motel 6 on Tuesday night. I knock on the door, I hear rustling in the room. 2 people talking, man and woman. Woman comes to the door and says "Yes?", and I Say I am from Dominos. The man opens the door.. The woman is standing by the door.. not behind, not in front of it, just aligned with ajar door. The man was about 55, and is completely dressed, like he just got back from a business thing, or was getting ready to go to one. the woman was asian, and completely NAKED. the guy was trying to give her a towel, and motion for her to put it around her. She didnt, she just left it kinda dangling on her arm. She had nice boobs.. The guy gave me a $5 tip, and I thanked him and told him to have a nice night. And then I started walking down the hall. I am sure if someone came along and passed me, they wouldve noticed a smirk, a surprised look on my face, and me laughing to myself for what I saw. people at the store, have talked about delivering to places where women are naked, or some other crazy shit. The best I had up to that point was when i first started, a woman answered her door in a bathrobe, and said she was just getting ready to get in the shower. And i thought it was peculiar because she ordered pizza, expecting it to be delivered, and then decided to get in the shower when the pizza was supposed to be getting there?

Anyway, so after motel 6, I delivered to the ghetto. And the woman answered the door with her pants completely undone.. I was thinking to myself, "what are the next deliveries going to be like"? but they were tame..

iateyourhotdog posted a download link to download the Best of Santo and Johnny.. I jumped on that quickly. I'v always loved "Sleep Walk", ever since I first heard it in La Bamba. I didnt know who did the song up til about 3 or 4 years ago. "Sleep Walk" is an amazing instrumental. I love the feeling and emotion that erupts from the guitar, and the mood that it all invokes. the whole best of cd is full of beautiful instrumental songs. I dont know who plays guitar, but they are nothing short of amazing.

I've entered a new era. I actually now have a cellphone that supports ringback tones.. So, now my first ever ringback tone is Ambulance LTD's "Stay Where You Are". And my ring tone is Peeping Tom's "Mojo". they were actually hard decisions, because I saw stuff from Kiss, Alkaline Trio, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, PAul Mccartney, and even PAntera. Would love to have them all. I told myself I wouldnt buy any ringtones till next month, because I bought a game this week. I lied to myself, I guess.

Listened to a Shinedown album a lot today while driving around for work. I'm pretty much digging it. Which is weird, because I had another Shinedown cd and I didnt like it. Same thing is going for HIM's Venus Doom. I've had every HIM album, didnt like it, and have sold them all on half.com. But this one I am liking. I'm considering giving HIM and Shinedown second chances.

and can I just say it's weird that Sammy Hagar covered "Fight For Your Right to Party". I just find it odd when older artists cover younger ones. Like when Tom Jones covered Prince' "Kiss". But, then again Johnny Cash's versions of "Hurt" and "Rusty Cage" were pretty good.

This week has been harsh. i hadnt had a day off since last Friday. and for whatever reason, every day this week has felt like hell. i'm always hurting myself some how when working for Coca Cola. Generally it is smashing a finger between cases of 2 liters. yesterday, i was taking down a 12 pack end cap display. As i was attempting to reach into one of the bottom shelfs, I hit the from of the shelf with the tip of my finger really hard, and fast, and it like bent it backwards. and now it is stiff and hurts like hell. it might be broken or something? i can bend it somewhat. just not all the way down to the palm of my hand. i dont think i will be making a fist for a day, or a few weeks. hopefully it doesnt prevent me from being able to pick up product?

in addition to working for Coke every day since last Satuday, I have also worked two days at Dominos(Tues and Thurs). Both days have been unusually good. i worked 4 hours on Tuesday, had like 8 deliveries and came home with more than $30. thats actually good for a Tuesday. Then last night, I had 11 deliveries, and came home with more than $60. it helped last night, that 6 of my 11 deliveries was in Swedesboro. I get $1.50 for each delivery to Swedesboro, vs. the standard $1 delivery to anywhere else, from Dominos. Swedesboro is just a lot further then the other towns. And people out there tend to tip better. but there are also more expensive housing out there too.

As far as music goes this week. i have listened to Switched, Systematic, The Sword, and now System of a Down. This is it for the S's. After this, it's about 200 Soundtracks and compilations. What will I do when I am done with this project? I was actually thinking about doing the same thing with the DVDs. Who knows? Maybe I will take up knitting?
